Gloria Jean Hurrelbrink July 28, 2015

Gloria Jean (Marshall) Hurrelbrink was born on October 24, 1929 in the home built by her parents on Oak Street in Newport, Kentucky. She was the youngest of five children, three of whom she only met at the time of her death on July 24, 2015.

She was married for 65 years to her husband Jack Edward Hurrelbrink and was mother to three children: two whom she birthed, Cindy Jean Hurrelbrink Peak and Jay Edward Hurrelbrink, and one whom she loved as her own, Dana Matthew Dixon.

She was a 1947 graduate of Newport High School and attended Olivet Nazarene College. Afterwards, she worked at R. L. Polk in Cincinnati, Ohio as a comptometer operator and later as a bookkeeper and financial secretary. She then devoted her life to the rearing of her children and making a home for her husband and family. She also became a Real Estate agent for Ila Blythe in Newport, Kentucky.
She was a talented woman, mastering the arts of ceramic pottery and porcelain doll making. She was gentle and loving; especially so to children, the elderly, and puppy dogs. She loved God all her life and strove to live her life pleasing to Him; her quiet witness to her Lord led others to seek Him as well. She served, caring for the elderly in her church and community, by taking them to doctors’ appointments, church, the grocery store, and the like.

She lived most of her life in her hometown of Newport, Kentucky, but also lived for a short time in Florence, Kentucky; the final 19 years she resided in Melbourne, Florida. She traveled extensively across the United States, Canada, and Europe.

The last 13 years of her life she lived with dignity, fighting with all her might the onset of Alzheimer ’s disease, and although it ravaged her mind, she never let it win for her indomitable spirit was there to the very end.

She is survived by her husband Jack Hurrelbrink, her son-in-law and daughter, Bob and Cindy (Hurrelbrink) Peak, her son and daughter-in-law Jay and Melissa (Hobbs) Hurrelbrink, and two grandchildren Jillian Marie and Justin Edward Hurrelbrink. She was predeceased by her parents James Emmett and Leona Locke (Wilson) Marshall, her sisters Nelda Virginia and Carolyn Marshall, and her brothers James Emmett and Robert Emmett Marshall. She is also survived by Robert’s wife, her sister-in-law, Betty (Mersman) Marshall. She was the daughter-in-law to Jacob Edward and Anna (Reese) Hurrelbrink; the sister-in-law to Thelma and Joseph Scales, Edward and Dorothy Hurrelbrink, Frank and Betty Hurrelbrink, Cliff and Dona Lee Hurrelbrink, and Shirley Hurrelbrink, all of whom except Dona Lee Hurrelbrink have passed. She was the loving aunt to Greg Marshall, Kim (Marshall) Digennaro, Tracey (Marshall) Banks; Mike (deceased), David (deceased), and John Scales; Steve, Rick, Danny (deceased), and Ray Hurrelbrink; Rodney, Victor, Frank (deceased), Edward, Peter, and David Hurrelbrink; and Lyn (Hurrelbrink) Hood.

Services will be held at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, 822 York Street, Newport, Kentucky on Sunday the 2nd of August, 2015. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 pm with a short service at 3 pm. She will be entombed at Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate, Kentucky on Monday the 3rd of August, 2015.

A dear friend said this of Mom’s passing:

“Perhaps they are not the stars,
but rather openings in heaven
where the love of our lost ones pours through
and shines down upon us
to let us know they are happy.

May her soul rest in peace.”
