Joan Guntzelman, age 79, passed away February 1 at Rae Ann Nursing Home in Westlake, OH after having lived an exceptionally full life. During the last several years she has been suffering from Parkinson’s Disease and dementia. Joan was born to Louis and Eleonora Guntzelman on January 23, 1937 during the “great flood” in Cincinnati. After graduation from St. Mary’s High School in Cincinnati in 1955, she entered the Sisters of Charity at Mt. St. Joseph. She earned a BS Degree in nursing and a Master of Science Degree in Clinical Psychology at Xavier University. After she left the Sisters of Charity Community in 1973, she was employed by Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, NM. Joan earned a PhD in Counseling Psychology and served as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry, University of New Mexico. Joan was a popular nationally known speaker, and had a long history in grief counseling. In more recent years Joan was the Executive Director and served on the board of Ring Lake Ranch, DuBois, WY, an ecumenical retreat center, and spent ten years arranging for guest speakers and organizing sessions for attendants at the ranch. Joan also authored several books concerning life’s losses and grieving. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Rev. Louis J. Guntzelman, and her sister Carol J. Dermody. She is survived by her brother Raymond (Sue) Guntzelman, her sister Mary Ellen Guntzelman, and her nieces and nephews Laura Dermody, Tom (Sue) Dermody, Michael (Jennifer) Dermody, and Jennifer (Jeffrey) Hildebrandt, and great nieces and nephews Jack Herbert, Luke, Ellie and Mason Dermody, Elise, Connor and Liam Dermody, and Jeffrey, Jr. and Caroline Hildebrandt. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to St. Cecilia Church, 3105 Madison Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45209; or Purcell Marian High School, 2935 Hackberry St., Cincinnati, OH 45206; or Ring Lake Ranch, PO Box 806, Dubois, WY 82513. Visitation at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home at 5950 Kellogg Avenue in Cincinnati on Friday, February 5 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Cecilia Church at 3105 Madison Rd in Cincinnati on Saturday, February 6 at 10:30 am. Internment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery following the funeral Mass.
