Norman Howard February 21, 2014

Norman (Norm) Howard, of Vancouver, Washington, died Feb 20, 2014 of natural causes. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on October 21, 1932, the middle son of Miller L. and Nancy G. Howard. The family move to Norwood, Ohio, soon after where he graduated from Norwood High School in 1950. He joined the Ohio National Guard and was called to active duty in December, 1951, and was subsequently mobilized for the Korean War. After his discharge, he began work as a teller at First National Bank of Cincinnati and was later made Head Teller at the Hyde Park Branch. In 1957, he was hired to open and manage a new branch bank for Citizens First National Bank of Xenia in Bellbrook, Ohio. He left the bank in 1962 and became a sales representative for NCR Corp. in Hamilton, Ohio. In 1969, he was promoted to the home office in Dayton where he was able to travel the country. A side benefit of traveling the country was to find out where he would like to work and live when his commitment was up at corporate headquarters. As a result of his visits to Portland, where he went skiing his first time at Mt. Bachelor and salmon fishing out of Astoria, he decided the Northwest was the place to be, and was delighted when he was offered the job of Manager of Financial Sales in February, 1972. He left NCR in 1977 and started his own company, Alpha Paper Products & Systems, which he operated until he sold the company and retired in 1998. Norm was an active member of the Bergfreunde Ski Club for several years where he was instrumental in starting and coordinating the golf program for several years and where he enjoyed many friends. In addition to his children and grandchildren, golf, skiing and sailing were his passions and why he loved living in the northwest. He leaves behind a daughter, Vicki, in New York State, son, David, in Cincinnati, and son, Brian, in Portland, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The American Heart Association or Hospice of Cincinnati.
