William A. Mullen May 30, 1927 - December 29, 2018

William A. Mullen, known to many as Moon/Bud entered eternal rest on December 29, 2018 at Carmel Manor in Ft. Thomas, KY. He was born in Newport, KY on May 30, 1927 to his parents, Eleanor (Flaherty) and William Kaufman Mullen. Growing up as the eldest son of eight children, Bud learned to value family, hard work and sportsmanship at a very early age.  While attending Newport High School, as a member of the football team, his love for athletics took root and this passion continued throughout life as his favorite pastime.  He went on to participate competitively in softball and bowling leagues and he also enjoyed coaching Knothole Baseball. Bud was a WWII veteran, who enlisted into the Army and reported for service at Camp Atterbury, IN on January 11, 1946.  Based at Ft. Meyers, he was stationed in the American Theatre during WWII at Arlington National Cemetery, serving on the Army’s ceremony unit. As a veteran, he was an active member of the James Wallace Costigan Post No. 11 of the American Legion (Home Board Member and Financial Officer), covering numerous responsibilities over the years.  “Moon” provided for his family by working in the beverage service industry as a driver/salesman for M. Link Distributor (Strohs & Miller Beer). As a Cancer survivor, he was a true inspiration to those who knew of the battle he waged against his disease in his early sixties.  Throughout this ordeal, Bud demonstrated exceptional determination as he bravely endured and overcame the sometimes- overwhelming complications associated with his treatments. Besides his devoted parents, Bud was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, the love of his life, Lily Pearl (Reed); his dear daughter, Kathy L.  Mullen; two sisters, Eleanor Harden and Ethel “Sis” Bass and two brothers, Albert and Robert Mullen. He is survived by his loving children, Bernadette (Charles) Tarvin; William (Kathy) Mullen and Michael (Katie) Mullen and will be deeply missed by his sisters, Jeanette Ruebusch, Mary Lou Arthur, JoAnn Runion and Helen (Moore) Mullen.  “PePaw” Mullen will long be remembered by his six grandchildren: Eric, Brandon, Kelly, Kim, Ashley, Amanda, as well as his seven great-grandchildren: Courtney, Allison, John, Elijah, Eleanor, Cecilia, Kaitlyn and Kayla. Throughout his life, he was blessed with many nieces, nephews, a host of other family members and very close friends.

A Visitation for William will take place on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 11:00 AM until the time of Catholic Blessing at 1:00 PM at the Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, 822 York Street, Newport, KY 41071.  Burial with military honors will follow at St. Stephens Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made in his remembrance to Carmel Manor.
